Illustration Friday: Remember

as i was sketching a bloc party song started playing in itunes...

"every park bench screams your name
I kept your tie
I've gone wherever you wanted
I still remember"
{"i still remember" ~ bloc party}

...it inspired me to finish by turning my sketch into a painting. i was so inspired that i was ridiculed by my friends for sitting home and finishing it on a friday night (now it is saturday morning), but hey it is done! :)

Illustration Friday: Polar

keeping in line with inspire me thursday's eco-art theme, i used a piece of cardboard from a mailing i received and turned it into a piece of art. the polar bears habitat is under threat, and i just want to swoop in and save them all!!! i imagine that is what the girl is doing here...riding her polar bear to safety where there is plenty of ice floating about, no hunters, and no pollution. to understand what is happening to the polar bears read this excerpt from a recent ABC news article:

"There has been a noticeable warming trend in portions of the polar bears' habitat, threatening the species with extinction by the end of this century. For instance in Canada's Hudson Bay, the ice that polar bears use to hunt seals-the mainstay of their diet-is melting two weeks earlier than it did 20 years ago, which means they have less time to hunt and store up needed fat. This is a particularly serious problem for the females because they use so much energy to nurse their cubs. Researchers report that there has been a 7 percent reduction in ice cover in just 25 years and a 40 percent loss of ice thickness. It is predicted there will be a mostly ice-free Arctic summer by 2080 if present trends continue. Other threats to the bears include pollution, poaching, and industrial disturbances. Also, hunting could become a threat if populations are not well managed." {source: ABC}
i can't imagine a world without polar bears, can you?

Inspire Me Thursday: Eco Art

For this piece I used 2 pieces of cardboard that came as packaging inserts on some cookie sheets i bought this weekend. I then used scrap paper, cards, and other pieces of paper laying around my studio to create the collage background. i then layered acyrlic paints for the image. the collage painting measures 12x12.

butterfly block prints

this weekend i carved out one of my butterfly sketches in a linoleum block, and last night i had some printing fun. i decided to go with blank ink on white paper and white ink on black paper just to play around with the contrast. overall, i was pleased with the results. i made a few note card sets for the etsy shop as well as a few 8 1/2 x 11 prints perfect for framing on my wall and also to be offered up at the etsy shop. the below prints are currently available on etsy now:

hand printed butterfly note card set of 2 $8
8 1/2 x 11 lino cut original block prints $20 each

inspire me thursday: change of scenery

changing the scenery is something i do all the time...i'm constantly sketching on the go. i am always inspired by nature, and my favorite thing to do is to sit in central park and sketch my little heart out. i did that for this challenge even though the weather wasn't exactly cooperating (i dressed warmly), i hope to find more inspiration in the park as the weather warms up (and the rain subsides) in any event, here is this weeks entry:

Cupcake Block Prints

i am currently hosting/moderating the cupcake love swap, and have been gathering things to send to my partner. i purchased some things on etsy, but decided to add in a few of my own things. i really wanted a recipe journal, so i took one of the blank journals i had laying around and transformed it! i also created a couple cupcake magnets, & also made a few cupcake notecard sets. i kept the ink light...using pink & lilac on brighter colored paper & prints. it was a lot of fun, and i ended up making so many things that i am now selling a magnet set & notecard set on etsy. anyway, here are some photos from my latest project!
